month's topic

as a matter of sound is a twelve-month project, with a new topic each month. the list bellow will be updated accordingly.

september (current topic) – a turning point given the season ending and beginning. just before the coming fall, just before the dimming sun of the winter, in the turn of the season and despite the turmoil times, the sounds are never stopping. we’d like you to capture the mortality of sounds, those that currently are the last in line, the last sounds of summer! the topic of this phase is “turning point” [/ˈtəːnɪŋ/ /pɔɪnt/ defined as the point at which a decisive change takes place; critical point; a point at which something changes direction].

august (current topic) – we are bored, in a summer time’s psychological inquisition, given the current global situation, but still… the boredom is overwhelming. slow paced activity in the midst of a light-fast sequences of reality, heat and most of all boredom. what is boredom? can that be described? can be recorded? the topic of this phase is “boredom” [/ˈbɔːdəm/ defined as the state of feeling bored. field record your own definition of boredom with any means necessary. enjoy your boredom, send it in sound!].

june & july (current topic) – the wage of a protest is loud or not. the wage of anger is loud or not. the wage of opposing is loud or not. the wage of self-transforming is loud or not. the wage of changes can be potentially very loud, or not. declarations or demands are inevitably loud or not. the sound of a boiling world is overwhelming and loud. the definite acknowledgement of an affirmation can sound exploding and as such, loud, or not. a statement can be overly heavy and thus, loud, or not. more specifically, we are referring to sound declaration, summer sound declaration(s). we need you to capture any current sounds of alteration, from an old state to a new one. the progression to the next step, either in a global or in a personal context. sounds of revolt or transgression, sounds of normality or the sounds of the absurd, the time it demands the world or just a glass of cold water. these sounds can be of a peaceful process or a violent one. We need you to capture the declaration of turbulence, as you currently perceive it. the topic of this phase is “declaration” [/dɛkləˈreɪʃ(ə)n/ defined as a formal or explicit statement or announcement].

may (current topic) – sounds of waking, sounds of disenchantment, first sounds after a hibernation, sounds of spring, sounds of a beginning, sounds of initiation, sounds of a start, sounds that declare a revelation. the sound of an engine start, the sound of a demonstration or a revolt, the sounds from the start of the day in either urban or rural landscapes. the sound of cough moments after getting off from from sleep; massive or minimal sounds. the topic is awakening [/əˈweɪkənɪŋ/ defined as the act of awaking from sleep, a revival of interest or attention, a recognition, realization, or coming into awareness of something. also as the starting of something, the transition from the “off” state to “on” state etc].

april (current topic) – before we go completely berserk with the current ongoing festival of the absurd, let’s take a closer look to… objects! interaction with them is a unique dialogue. objects that interact with each other is a unique dialogue as well. we actually talk to objects and they answer back, in their own way. imagine what happens when we cook or flush the toilet (just to name two extremes). interaction with objects produce sounds. the friction of an object on another object produce sounds; intentional or unavoidable ones. the topic is dialogues [/ˈdʌɪəlɒɡ/ defined as a conversation between two or more people. we ask you to capture the sound of your interaction with one or more objects or maybe two or more objects interacting with each other. you can… interview an item too, feel free to experiment as you wish].

march (current topic) – we are curious creatures, eager to know or learn things. we have an intimate need to unveil them, to crack them open, to rip the crust and see what’s inside. to transform them. the alteration of the form of an object produces a multitude of sounds. when ripping open a package, when cleaning an object and it’s surface unveils from underneath the dirt, when breaking a wooden box to see what’s inside, when carving a stone and a sculpture appear. the topic is unwrap [\ʌnˈræp\ defined as uncovering an object, that is covered with, or enclosed in paper, cloth or any other material (wrap)].

february – extreme music (industrial, noise, experimental, heavy metal etc among many more) were born in industrial towns, covered with bio mechanical dust and crushed by an iron fist. in harsh landscapes, the kind of sound is inevitable! either urban or rural, landscape is what -strongly- determines the sounds born therein. aesthetics are shaping and personalities are constructed. the topic is personality [\ˌpɜː(r)səˈnæləti\ defined as the characteristic sets of behaviors, cognitions, and emotional patterns that evolve from biological and environmental factors. there is no common agreement upon the definition of personality, but most theories focus on motivation and psychological interactions with one’s environment].

january – …and here we go… the topic is cocooning [\kə-ˈkü-niŋ\ defined as staying inside one’s home, insulated from perceived danger, instead of going out. the term was coined in 1981 by faith popcorn, a trend forecaster and marketing consultant. it is used in social science, marketing, parenting, economic forecasting, self-help, religion and has become part of standard english as defined by multiple dictionaries].
